Review: We test drive Lively.com . Google debuts new 3D virtual world 07/09/2008
Writer: Mark "Line" Cansino

Line's gone mad... In LivelyCompeting with There.com and SecondLife.com with online 3d chat worlds, Google debuted Tuesday 07/08/2008 Lively, a new 3D virtual world that's FREE. You download the software from Google's Lively site at www.Lively.com, once installed you log in with your free Google account, create your avatar, give it a name, and you're ready to visit public 3d rooms made by users all over.

Now before we go further, and you start heading to the site, we have to tell you, Lively is in beta and even though you can go in it. It's still under construction. Some things a bit buggy. I tried making my character sit in a chair and he sat in the opposite direction. Using the arrow keys on my keyboard did the opposite of what I thought they should do - This may not be a bug, and perhaps the keys are meant to move the world and not your cameras current location. I expected Right to go right and left to go left, but that didn't happen. But still, Lively is cool!

You can even check out the room I made for NewsForNow.com at www.NewsForNow.com/lively.
Please Note: We've noticed it takes quite a few minutes to load into a room, it may say "Joining room" for a bit. But be patient!

As a room/world creator you're given multiple options:
  • Give your room a name and description
  • You choose an atmosphere
  • You get to place in furniture and accesories
  • You can change the placement of items and the landing zone for when people first arrive
  • Add music and ambient sound from your computer

As a participant:
  • You can move your character around in a 3d environment
  • You can make your character animate with emotes like, laugh, smile, wave, LOL
  • Your character's emotes can interact with another user
  • Change your character - Add different clothing, hair styles, skin tones
  • If furniture is in the world, you can interact with it, for example sitting on the chair in our room

Controlling your character and moving the camera does take some getting used to, a + Arrow signal means you can move your character or object by clicking and dragging it to another location. a curved arrow in a yellow circle means you can rotate an object.
