300 Movie Review 03/02/2007
Writer: Mark "Line" Cansino
As one of my most anticipated movies of 2007, 300 has become my favorite so far. However, I should note right away the average movie goer may have to take this film with an extra hefty grain of salt because of the excessive violence, sexual content and gore. But, For those of you who were impressed by the trailer; this movie will not dissappoint you.

Gerard Butler as King Leonidas
( Gerard Butler as King Leonidas )

Each actor's performance was great and complimented one another. Gerard Butler's character' King Leonidas was great on film. Acting as a very fierce and strong leader, you can almost feel his performance come through the movie screen. There were only a couple minor parts which I felt the acting, or more the direction of the acting was a bit off-key but overall I felt the movie was great.

The Effects:

Like Frank Miller's previous movie, Sin City, 300 also uses some pretty cool imagery and special effects in a new way not seen before. And like his previous movie every now and then will be time to have Frank Miller's stapled look of black characters in darkness with a high contrasted light behind them for dramatic effect like you see in Frank Miller's Graphic Novels.

From film to comic, bringing it back to origin
( example shot in a battle scene where the spartan's push the persian army off a cliff.
Their bodies become silhouetted by the light as if to bring the shot back into the comic's art )

Every frame in this movie is really well done and you could take any frame at any moment and it would make the perfect picture. I even dare you to scrub through the trailer and stop at any point and find a frame you dislike. Unlike some battle scenes in other movies where they remove or black out every other frame during action to add more grittyness, 300 keeps the focus with no frame loss. One of my favorite things about this film is how great the attack scenes were with some slow motion capture.

Spartans Crush Those who stand in their way.

For example, in the second stand off with the persians. Where we see King Leonidas and his fellow warriors fighting side by side as the camera pans covering the fighting from it's side as they move forward; each attack after the next moving like water from an exploded dam crushing all their foes while no Spartan makes a single mistake.

Last Words:
While some very small parts of this movie could be changed slightly for perfection, it really was a great film of a graphic novel taking real history and making it a fun, fictional joyride with great quality film, acting, sound and movie-going worthyness. I would definitely rate this movie a 5/5 and say that I would not only see this movie again in the theaters but I would buy it on DVD. Great Job!
